Emergency response Nyiragongo volcano

On 22 May in the DRC, north of the city of Goma, the Nyiragongo volcano erupted violently, sending molten lava hurtling down the slopes towards densely populated areas.

Earthquakes of up to 5.3 magnitude shook the region and more than 400,000 people were evacuated, many of whom entered Rwanda to seek refuge.
Two villages in the northern part of Goma were destroyed and two others were almost completely covered by lava. Entire neighbourhoods are without electricity and water shortages are feared.

At least 32 people have died, according to UN estimates as of 24 May. The majority died trying to cross the still-cooling lava field, killed by deadly concentrations of toxic fumes escaping from underground vents on the side of the volcano.

Currently, 15,000 displaced people are in immediate need of food, water and safe shelter. It is not yet known if or when further eruptions or earthquakes may occur, leaving people throughout the area very vulnerable.
